The Gut Axis

Your gut runs far more than digestion.

Trillions of microbes, about 70% of your immune tissue and a nervous system of its own. Tap each system to see how it connects back to the gut.

Gut → Weight

Appetite & fullness

Gut hormones such as GLP-1 and PYY tell your brain you are full. Your microbes also influence how many calories you extract from food.

  • GLP-1 and PYY signal fullness
  • Microbes affect energy harvest
  • Fiber feeds bacteria that support satiety
The Palumbo approach

Find the root cause. Then build the plan.

Modern medicine is powerful, but lasting gut health rarely comes from a prescription alone. Dr. Palumbo pairs specialist GI care with root-cause testing, food knowledge, and the coaching and accountability that turn a plan into results.

01Map the gut

GI mapping & root-cause analysis

Alongside standard GI evaluation such as labs and endoscopy, comprehensive stool analysis (GI mapping) can look at the microbiome, digestion, inflammation markers and hidden infections. The goal is to treat the cause, not just the symptom.

02Food is information

Food & knowledge

What you eat shapes your microbiome within days. Dr. Palumbo wants patients to understand why food matters so changes stick: more fiber and protein, fewer ultra-processed foods, and meals matched to their gut.

03Modern medicine

Medicines & therapies

When it's needed, he uses today's best tools: newer acid blockers for reflux, targeted IBS treatment, and GLP-1 and other peptide-based medicines for diabetes and weight loss.

04Follow-through

Coaching & accountability

Knowing what to do is half the work. Weekly check-ins, nutrition coaching and strength training turn a plan into lasting results. That's where GetFitRx comes in.

GLP-1s, peptides & weight loss

The medicine works best with a plan behind it.

GLP-1 medicines, which are peptide-based, have changed how type 2 diabetes and obesity are treated. As a gastroenterologist, Dr. Palumbo understands both their benefits and their GI side effects, such as nausea and constipation, and how to manage them. He also knows what makes results last.

  • 01Proper nutrition. When appetite drops, every meal has to count, especially protein.
  • 02Strength training. Weight loss without it can cost muscle. Lifting helps you keep it.
  • 03Weekly accountability. Regular check-ins keep progress going and catch side effects early.
  • 04Body composition scans. Tracking lean mass, body fat and hydration shows what the scale can't.
I can find the root cause and prescribe the right medicine. What I don't have is time to check in on every patient's diet each week or teach a 30-minute strength class. GetFitRx does exactly that, with professionals second to none. It's the perfect marriage for my patients, and it's why I was eager to serve as Medical Director.
